What does a floor scrubber do?
As the name suggests, automatic floor scrubbers are used to scrub a floor clean of light debris, dust, oil, grease, and floor marks. After scrubbing, the dirt and wastewater are vacuumed up, leaving floors really clean and nearly dry. That contrasts with mopping that leaves high chemical and dirt residue. Floor scrubbers can be used to clean all floor surfaces including concrete, vinyl, wood, carpets, and tiles.
Why would I need an automatic floor scrubber?
Automatic floor scrubbers are ideal for cleaning any floor space that would be too difficult or uneconomical to clean manually. What’s more, the comprehensive cleaning capabilities of an auto scrubber ensures a better cleaning outcome than manual techniques. Scrubbers reduce OHS risk by reducing the physical load on staff.
How do floor scrubbers work?
Auto scrubbers have either a rotary disk or cylindrical scrubbing head, and a system for dispensing cleaning solution and then vacuuming it up afterward.
In one pass, an automatic scrubber dispenses the cleaning fluid, scrubs the floor clean, and then vacuums it up with a squeegee attachment at the back of the machine, leaving a clean and dry floor. Auto scrubbers have a separate solution dispensing tank and recovery or collection tank to keep the clean water separate from the dirty water. Most machines allow regulation of water and chemical flows, brush pressure, vacuum.
Types of floor scrubbers – Portable, walk-behind, and ride-on
There are three main types of automatic floor scrubbers that you can choose from:
Portable floor scrubbers – Portable floor scrubbers are carried on the back like a backpack with a cleaning handle like a broom or mop. Portable floor scrubbers come in either plug-in electrical models or battery-powered models. This makes them ideal for floor cleaning in tight spaces such as bathrooms and on stairs.
Walk-behind floor scrubbers – Walk-behind floor scrubbers are guided and controlled by handles at the back of the scrubber as you walk behind it. Walk-behind floor scrubbers come in three sizes: small, medium, and large to suit the floor area and cleaning capacity required.
Ride-on floor scrubbers – Ride-on automatic scrubbers are ideal for large open spaces. The operator sits on the scrubber and controls it via a steering wheel much like a ride-on mower. Operators like them for ease of use, and speed compared to walking. Ride-on scrubbers are also available in a variety of models and sizes to suit the cleaning capacity and type of cleaning required.
Things to consider when choosing a floor scrubber
Some of the important things to consider when choosing an automatic floor scrubber include:
-
The floor area to be cleaned – Will a ride-on or walk-behind model more effectively cover the size of the floor area?
-
The difficulty of accessing the floor area to be cleaned – If the job requires cleaning a lot of tight spaces, such as bathrooms or stairs, or intricate nooks and crannies, then a portable floor scrubber or a compact scrubber may be a more suitable option.
-
The most suitable brush head and other accessories – You’ll find a wide variety of brush heads and other accessories, such as squeegee attachments, to suit particular floor types and cleaning applications under the link for each type of floor scrubber below.
-
Battery or electric power on smaller machines, and ride on may offer battery, LPG, diesel or petrol power. The battery has a time frame of no cords or fumes but requires extended hours of recharge before reuse.
